HOUSETSU OTSUKA Biography

Housetsu Otsuka’s style is energetic and beautifuly exectuted in traditional Japanese Sho brush style on rice paper.  Otsuka's calligraphy produces a natural spirit in the mind and induces a calm feeling. His works are collected widely by corporations and  private individuals and are displayed in several public places and museums.


1960

Awarded First Prize, exhibition sponsored by the Dokuritsu Shodoudan (Independent Calligraphers)

1961

Awarded Second Prize, two consecutive years in exhibitions sponsored by the Dokuritsu Shodoudan

1963

Became a junior member, Association of Independent Calligraphers

1964

Invited to become a junior member, Dokuritsu Shodoudan The Association of Independent Calligraphers (the Independent Calligraphers include among their members the most outstanding Calligraphers living and working in Japan.)

1965

Became a full member, Association of Independent Calligraphers

1967

One-man show

1970

Invited to full membership, Dokuritsu Shodoudan

1971

Awarded Grand Prize, calligraphy exhibition, sponsored by Mainichi Shinbun Chosen as a guest artist, special invitational exhibition of calligraphy, sponsored by Mainichi Shinbun

1975

Nominated to show his work, exhibition for Showa artists (Only artists born in Showa, that is, from 1925, were considered eligible for this special exhibition.) One-man show, Azuma Gallery
